American Lamb Board

How to Apply for the Board

Industry representation and diversity was top of mind when the Mandatory Lamb Checkoff was planned so that the US sheep industry who pays assessments is represented. There are 13 members of the American Lamb Board, and they must meet specific criteria.

  ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

If you are interested in becoming a member of the American Lamb Board, there are two fundamental criteria:

  •  Must be a producer, feeder, seedstock producer, or first handler who markets or handles lamb or lamb products in the United States and pays the mandatory assessment.

  • Must be nominated by a certified producer organization and submit a completed application.

  CERTIFIED ORGANIZATIONS

Keep in mind that nominations for ALB members must come from organizations which have been certified by USDA. These organizations represent producers, feeders, seedstock producers and first handlers. The list of organizations who may nominate to the ALB is on the Agricultural Marketing Service/USDA website.

  DIVERSITY AND OUTREACH PLAN

The American Lamb Board is diverse and committed to recruiting a board of directors that is representative of the industry’s diversity. The outreach plan addresses ALB’s desire to increase awareness of and interest in serving on the American Lamb Board among black, female, Hispanic, Native American, nontraditional and ethnic marketers, and young leaders.

The American Lamb Board’s Industry Outreach committee will oversee and implement the diversity outreach activities.  The activities include:

  • Developing key diversity communication and recruitment tools including a new “the many faces of the American Lamb industry” brochure and power point presentation for industry meetings

  • Posting information on the updated lamb checkoff website related to serving on the ALB Board and diversity

  • Developing a series of ads in key industry publications to be placed during January-March (pre-USDA nomination announcements) regarding serving on the ALB Board/the importance of diversity

  • Mailing copies of the new diversity/recruitment brochure to all certified nominating organizations, direct marketers, extension offices, auction markets, the American AgriWomen, National Black Growers Council, National Latino Farmers and Ranchers Trade Association, and the Intertribal Agriculture Council

  • Presenting information about ALB, how to serve on the Board, and the importance of a diverse Board at the NLFA Leadership School, the Young Entrepreneurs meeting during convention, and other key industry meetings

  • Distributing the diversity/recruitment brochure at industry meetings, the FFA convention, compliance audits, industry tours etc.
